I had earlier shared my thoughts on this in a short post  Religion and Spirituality A few more thoughts on the same subject: Religiosity can ascend to spirituality through a graded and continual process of refinement. This is the most common path taken by most spiritualists.

Spirituality on the other hand can never descend to religiosity. spirituality in its purest essence means to touch the “spirit within and without” – when that happens there is no question of a descent – Ramana Maharishi is the greatest example of a direct ascent into the highest echelons of spirituality.

Religiosity however runs the risk of descending into bigotry, intolerance, hatred, and violence. Therein lies the danger in an overtly religious approach and a literal interpretation of the religious tenets…
